Angelina’s Ristorante, Southwest Florida’s premier Italian dining experience, has earned the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for 2012. The only restaurant in Lee County to be recognized with this prestigious award, Angelina’s features a hand-picked list of wines from around the world with a special focus on Italian producers. The focal point of the restaurant is the 30-foot wine tower which includes more than 4,000 bottles of domestic and international wine. Wine Spectator magazine’s Restaurant Wine List Awards recognize restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers. To qualify for an award, the list must present complete, accurate wine information. It must include vintages and appellations for all selections, including wines available by the glass. Complete producer names and correct spellings are mandatory, while the overall presentation and appearance of the list is also taken into consideration. After meeting these basic requirements, lists are judged for one of three awards. The Best of Award of Excellence, the magazine’s second-tier or two-glass award, was created to give special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence. These lists typically offer 400 or more selections, along with superior presentation, and display either vintage depth, with several vertical offerings of top wines, or excellent breadth across several wine regions. This year, only 878 restaurants worldwide earned this honor. Globally, there are more than 2,800 one-glass Award of Excellence winners and 75 three-glass Grand Award recipients. A complete list of winners will be featured in the Aug. 31 issue of Wine Spectator. “A three-time recipient of the celebrated Award of Excellence, we have taken great strides in fine-tuning our wine to provide a list that showcases the depth and breadth of Angelina’s superb wine program,” said Angelina’s sommelier, Angela Morales, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. “Angelina’s Ristorante is dedicated to our extensive wine list, food quality and uncompromised service we offer our guests.” Angelina’s showcases 16 different Italian verticals: five with five vintages, three with six, three with seven, two with four and three with three. Also featured are two French verticals, with the showpiece of the collection being the 13 vintages offered by Château Lafite Rothschild. The majority of the restaurant’s wines come from small, family-owned wineries. Forty-nine percent (274) of the wines are priced under $100, with 124 of them priced at $50 or less. Angelina’s also offers the Sommelier’s Collector’s Cellar of 35 wines priced from $210 to $5,963. The hallmark of fine dining in Southwest Florida, Angelina’s Ristorante features the diverse flavors of Italy recreated with the freshest ingredients and lightest touch. Committed to excellence, the 210-seat award-winning restaurant is ideal for a romantic, classic Italian meal for two or a private party for 50.
